Introduction: 4 additional Megabytes of memory upgrades your Nintendo64 for the next generation of games. The Expansion Pak lets you experience more detailed graphics and enhanced sound with a whole host of new software. Selected Nintendo 64 titles pump out bigger, better, brighter visuals when the Expansion Pak is slotted into the top of the system. But that's only half the story. This tiny slab of miracle technology adds 4 megabytes of memory to the Nintendo 64, which developers can exploit in myriad exciting ways aside from improved graphics. Perhaps the game will feature more massive levels; perhaps your enemies will be more intelligent; maybe sound will be crisper. Whatever the case, you can be sure that Expansion Pak-compatible games will offer you plenty of bang for your buck. (The Expansion Pak will have no effect on non-compatible games). Look for the Expansion Pak icon on Game Paks that support this accessory. Donkey Kong 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask require the use of the Expansion Pak. Perfect Dark runs in a restricted mode without the Expansion Pak. The Expansion Pak for Nintendo 64 allows the Random Access Memory (RAM) of the Nintendo 64 console to increase from four megabytes (MB) to eight MB of contiguous main memory. With the help of an included key (not included), the Expansion Pak fits into the slot below a removable panel on the top of the N64 console. Game developers can take advantage of the increased memory in several ways, including making games that are more visually appealing. Some games will allow players to choose a "high resolution" option, increasing the screen resolution from 320 by 240 pixels to as much as 640 by 480 pixels, creating crisp, high-definition graphics. The Expansion Pak utilises Nintendo 64's capability for 32-bit, 16.7-million-colour display with 256 levels of transparency (alpha), bringing your games to a new level of realism. Instead of re-using texture data, games can buffer a larger number of textures for a more distinct look. Other ways for developers to utilise the larger memory is by setting a higher frame rate, longer replays and more animation. Games can also have more sophisticated artificial intelligence, allowing computer-controlled characters literally to be smarter. Games can offer more characters and vehicles, and can contain larger, more complex levels and worlds. Some games like Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask require the Expansion Pak, while others such as Perfect Dark require it for access to all of the game's levels and features. |
