Description

Introduction:

Far from the shadows of Coruscant’s skyscrapers lies the dangerous Outer Rim.

To many citizens, the galaxy's edge represents a hive of scum and villainy that is better left ignored. But to the scoundrels of the galaxy, the Outer Rim represents the opportunity to become a legend.

Explore the galaxy for yourself with Star Wars: Outer Rim, a game of bounty hunters, mercenaries, and smugglers for one to four players!

In Outer Rim, players take on the roles of outlaws on the fringes of society and set out to make their mark on the galaxy. You’ll travel the Outer Rim in your personal ship, hire legendary Star Wars characters to join your crew, and vie to cement your place in the legends of the Star Wars galaxy!

Do you have what it takes to survive the dangers of the Outer Rim while building your own legacy?
Features:

Across the Galaxy:

The goal of Outer Rim is to be the first player to ten fame, but the path to notoriety can be different for every scoundrel. Some will spend their time crossing paths with the various factions patrolling the Outer Rim, others will track down iconic Star Wars characters dead or alive for bounties, still more will make their fortune delivering illegal cargo, dodging patrols and encounters as they make their way across the galaxy.

A game of Outer Rim takes place over a series of turns that are each split into three steps.

Planning Step – During this step, the active player may gain credits, move across the galaxy, or recover all of their damage.
Action Step – Here, the active player may perform any number of actions, including buying cards from a communal marketplace and delivering cargo and bounties.
Encounter Step – The active player resolves a single encounter, usually by drawing an encounter card corresponding to their space.

Turns continue until one player reaches ten fame, at which point they become a living legend and win the game!

Daring Outlaws:

But before you begin your journey, you have to step into the shoes of one of eight iconic Star Wars characters, each with their own personal goal and ability. Han Solo may want to find the fastest ship in the galaxy, while Boba Fett is looking to bring in bounties dead or alive.

Completing a character’s personal goal not only gives you more fame, it allows you to flip your character card over and receive an even more powerful ability!

Your character won't make it too far without a ship, however. Every ship determines how quickly you can move across the galaxy, along with your power and hull strength in ship-to-ship combat. While you’ll start with one of two starter ships, as you climb your way up the ladder of fame and credits, you may soon find yourself purchasing ships like a modified YT-1300 light freighter or a Firespray-31 patrol craft. While these ships will enhance your stats, they also have personal goals, like characters. Once accomplished, these goals garner you more fame and turn your generic ship into an iconic Star Wars vessel.

Planning Ahead:

With your character and ship close at hand, you’re ready for your first adventure in the Outer Rim. On your turn, you’ll begin in the planning phase, and you're immediately faced with a choice of how to spend your time. Taking odd jobs around your current location earns you 2,000 credits, but prevents you from moving. Making repairs to your ship ensures you’re ready for a fight, but again anchors you to your current location. These options can prepare you for the encounters to come, but you’ll never become a legend if you don’t take to the stars. Your final option is movement, travelling along hyperspace routes from planet to planet in search of fame and credits.

Once you’ve completed your planning step, you move into the action step, which lets you perform any number of actions. You may trade cards with another player in your space, buy a card from a market deck, deliver cargo and bounties to an indicated planet to gain a reward, or resolve an action on one of your cards.

The market is the primary way in which you can gain bounties, cargo, gear, jobs, and mods. Each of these is represented by one of the six market decks in the center of the board. When you take a market action, you may discard the top card from one of these decks, reveal a new card, and then purchase the top card of one of the six decks. Each of these cards has a credit cost in the upper right corner, and each has a unique place on your player board to slot into.

The most direct way to enhance your fame is by completing jobs, capturing bounties, and delivering cargo to various planets across the Outer Rim. But this is much more difficult than it sounds. As you move across the galaxy, you’ll have to deal with patrols from the Rebel Alliance, Imperials, the Hutts, and the galaxy's Crime Syndicates. Your player board contains four slots that track your reputation with each of these factions. Performing various jobs for these factions will put you in good standing, and allow you to pass right by their patrols. But attacking them for fame and glory, or taking jobs that hurt these factions puts you in negative standing, and as you travel across the galaxy, increasingly powerful patrols may hunt you down.

Strange Encounters:

Even after you have taken your last action, you are far from safe. The Outer Rim is full of danger and opportunity. At the end of your turn, you'll draw an encounter card based on your location. These encounter cards may provide new cargo or mods, help you make some progress on a job, or even test your skills for the opportunity to gain a huge reward.

A skill test sees you rolling two dice—identical to the dice featured in X-Wing and fully compatible with that game—to determine if your job or encounter is successful. Your odds depend on your character and crew: Lando Calrissian may excel at rigging a game of sabacc, but IG-88 is more likely blast a hole in an organic!

To perform a skill test you roll two dice, and success is determined by how skilled you are.

Unskilled (you don’t have the skill being tested): You need at least one critical hit to pass.
Skilled (you have the skill once): You need at least one critical hit or hit to pass.
Highly Skilled (you have the skill more than once): You need at least one critical hit, hit, or focus to pass.

These skill tests can be challenging, and while failure may mean you're back on the street, success can lead to untold riches, and your story will continue to grow as tales of your impressive feats spread throughout the Outer Rim.
